25 Years Ago Berrett Middle School Plans Being Shelved - Survey To Be Conducted To Determine Feasibility Of Multi-county School—Apparently plans for the controversial Berrett Middle School have been shelved, at least for the time being. A letter from the Interagency Committee on School Construction (IAC) to Dr. George E. Thomas, superintendent of Carroll County Schools, dated June 5th indicated the Berrett School project should be halted while a survey is made on the feasibility of a multi-county school, hopefully in the Mt. Airy area, and therefore the matter of Berrett School was removed from the June 6th agenda of the IAC. The Community Reporter, June 21, 1974.

75 Years Ago Bear Shot At Oakland Mills—Tuesday afternoon while ploughing his field near Oakland Mills, Mr. Woodrow Sullivan, one of our prominent farmers of that locality, was surprised to hear something walking near him. On looking back he was almost scared out of his shoes to see a big black bear following in the corn row about a hundred feet behind the plow. Mr. Sullivan quickly unhooked the traces of his plow harness made one leap and landed on the horse's back and away they went for the barn, where he secured a shot gun. The bear seeing Sullivan coming towards him ran out in a nearby woods. At 8 p.m. the same night Mr. Sullivan was aroused by a commotion in the cattle pen, and loading his gun with cut shells went out. There he found bruin after a helfer calf. Three shots were fired into the bear, and Wednesday morning, Mr. Sullivan and his neighbor, Vivian Leatherwood, after hunting the animal all night, found a trail of blood about 300 yards from where the bear was trying to get at the young cow. It is estimated that bruin weights about 175 pounds. Democratic Advocate, June 20, 1924.

100 Years Ago The County Commissioners were in session on Monday and among the business transacted accepted the road petitioned by Mr. John Galt and others. The board decided to have an iron bridge erected over Little Pipe Creek, at Cassell's Mill, about four miles from this city on the New Windsor road. The bridge will have a span 50 feet between abutments and a roadway 14 feet in the clear. Bids for the erection of the bridge will be received until July 10, and the contract will be awarded to the lowest responsible bidder. American Sentinel, June 17, 1899.
