25 Years Ago WOUNDED BIRDSMayor Powell informed the council that he received a long letter from a concerned local resident who wants to protect birds from being wounded by air rifles. Unfortunately, the present ordinance does not mention this particular gun by name, making legal action difficult. "I plan to see that this is rectified," stated the mayor. The Carroll Record, June 8, 1972.
50 Years Ago SKY DANGERS AT CARLIN'SOpening on Decoration Day mid the plaudits of the thousands that thronged to Carlin's Park for the weekend holiday, the famous Betty and Benny Fox Sky Dancing team is still holding the Park visitors spellbound with their death-edfying and thrilling dances and stunts on an 19-inch platform atop a pole 125 feet in the air. Those who have seen this great free act are acclaiming it one of the most daring they have ever witnessed and one can readily understand why so many watch breathlessly as Betty and Benny swirl and sway doing waltzes, rumbas, and even leg twirling jitterbug dances so high in the air. Nothing seems to daunt this dainty little couple and it is no wonder that they are popular with the crowds. According to the management Betty and Benny Fox will perform every night and three times during Saturday and Sunday. If you want thrills and fun it looks like Carlin's Park is the spot to find it this week. Democratic Advocate, June 6, 1947.
75 Years Ago LARGEST CROWD IN HISTORY OF WESTMINSTER EXPECTEDThe time is rapidly approaching for that long heralded event of the year the presentation of the Sheathing of the Sword at the dedication of the Athletic Field at Western Maryland College on Saturday June 10th at 3:15 P.M. That which has taken weeks of careful planning, much thinking and energetic work is now ready for your inspection. You cannot afford to miss this great scenic performance as it will doubtless prove a triumph in the history of not only the town and county but also of the state. Aviators have flown over Baltimore this week and scattered dodgers to publish the fact. American Sentinel, June 9, 1922.
100 Years Ago A number of citizens of Westminster and this county very perceptibly felt an earthquake shock on Monday about 2 p.m. The evening paper brought news that a shock had been felt in various parts of the state and dispatches in the daily press of Tuesday showed that the commotion was perceptible over a wide territory, extending from the northern part of New York to Georgia, and as far west as Ohio. No damage was done anywhere, except in Giles county, Va., where a deep fissure was made in a mountain and all the water was drained out of a lake. Democratic Advocate, June 8, 1897.
