The Basil Crapster Papers

Introduction to Part I:  Family History Files

Dr. Crapster created family surname file for significant families in his area of research.   The files typically contain a variety of references including, abstracts of public documents such as deeds, wills, inventories of personal property and administration accounts.  Only occasionally will a file contain copies of documents themselves; most of the information in the files consists of Dr. Crapster's handwritten notes, which can be difficult to read.   Some files will also contain information from a wide variety of sources including, account books, letters, diaries, genealogies, correspondence from other researchers, articles and newspaper clippings.  Researchers should familiarize themselves with the following guidelines:

1.   Files are organized by family surnames in alphabetical order essentially in the same manner as created by Dr. Crapster.
2.   Significant alternative surname spellings (i.e. ANGEL/ENGEL) have been provided when appropriate.  Researchers should be aware that files will often contain additional alternate surname spellings.
3.   When significant additional information is available in other Family History Files, a cross reference is provided.
4.   When significant additional information is available in other parts of the Crapster Collection, a cross reference is provided.
5.   All deeds, court records, wills, etc., dated prior to the formation of Carroll County in 1837 are cited as Frederick County, Maryland documents.
6.    Unless otherwise noted, all counties referenced are in Maryland.
7.   Small settlements in Maryland are identified by county.
8.   The following abbreviations are used to denote the location of records copied by Dr. Crapster:

MHR - Maryland Hall of Records/Maryland State Archives, Annapolis.
MHS - Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore.

Access to the Collection

Access to the Crapster Collection is by appointment with the Society's curatorial staff during regular HSCC Library hours.   Patrons should contact the staff for an appointment prior to visiting the Society.   The Society's staff can also conduct fee-based research in the Crapster Collection or provide copies of the information in some files.  Because most of the files contain handwritten notes, they do not always copy well and can be difficult to read.  HSCC will provide the best available copies of these materials but is not responsible for the poor quality of some copies.
