HAPPENINGS AT THE

HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF CARROLL COUNTY

Christmas in Delaware
December 1, 2007

A coating of snow set the scene for HSCC's annual holiday bus trip.  This year's journey saw us heading north.  A later than usual departure got us to the Hagley Museum near Wilmington just in time for a catered lunch in the museum's Soda House.

Then it was time for the tour of the original DuPont powder mills.  Located on the bank on the Brandywine River, the mills reflect the early manufacturing history of the valley.  The grinding of ingredients for black powder was a dangerous and often explosive task.  The operation was conducted in small facilities, constructed of massive stones, which funneled the force of any explosions out over the river and away from adjoining mills.  A mill race channeled the waters of the Brandywine to the enormous waterwheels that powered the mills

On the hilltop overlooking the mills stands the DuPont home - Eleutherian Mills.  Adjacent to the house is the first headquarters of the DuPont company - a small stone structure.

After a hearty afternoon tea at Hagley, the group set off for Longwood Gardens.  Arriving just at the sun set, there was plenty of time to stroll the illuminated gardens, shake off the winter chill in the elaborately decorated greenhouses and marvel at the musical dancing fountains.
