MARYLAND AND THE CIVIL WAR:
A REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE |
| On Saturday, March 15, over 100
Civil War historians - amateur and professional - came together at the 11th
annual conference sponsored by HSCC and Carroll Community College.
The day began with Marc Leepson, author of the Desperate Engagement,
discussing the battle of Monocacy. Mr. Leepson was available to much
of the day to talk with participants, answer their questions and sign copies
of his book.

Participants then had a choice of concurrent session with
topics including the role of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the Civil
War (presented by Dave Shackleford of the B&O Railroad Museum), Civil War
medicine (by Betsy Estilow of Hood College and the National Museum of Civil
War medicine) and the role of artillery (by Al Preston of South Mountain
State Battlefield). Preston even brought along a cannon to use as a
visual aid. |

| After lunch, a very special session taught everyone about dancing during the Civil War. Dance masters Karen and Briant Bohleke demonstrated some of the most popular dances of the time before getting audience members up on stage to give some of the steps a try. | |

| The finale to the day was another set of concurrent sessions on the battle of South Mountain (by Al Preston) and Firearms of the Civil War (presented by Timothy App who brought some objects from his personal collection as examples). With good sessions, good exhibitors and good food, a good time was had by all and many are already planning to attend next year's event. | |
