Mt. Airy on the B&O The town of Mt. Airy sits in a unique position at the junction of three counties. Mike Eacho, President of the Mt. Airy Historical Society, will discuss the history and development of Mt. Airy focusing on the role of the B&O Railroad, the planes of Parr's Ridge, the neighboring communities and the fires have plagued the town. B.L.T.s are held at Carroll Post, American Legion, Westminster, MD. The Post is at the corner of Green and Sycamore Streets. Free parking is available in the lot in front of the building. B.L.T.s begin at noon and last 45 minutes to an hour. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch. Beverages and dessert are provided. Past Times for Children: Memorial Day Parades Children 3 to 6 years old will discover what Carroll County was like in the 1800s. They will travel back in time through themed stories, songs and crafts or activities. Westminster has one of the longest running Memorial Day parades in the U.S. Your child will celebrate parades through music, creativity and literature. They will create a flag that they will be able to wave at the Westminster Memorial Day parade on May 28th. 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Koontz-Yingling Learning Center at Cockey’s, 216 East Main Street in Westminster, MD. For each class, there is a $5.00 charge and pre-registration is required. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver (over the age of 18) who must remain in the building during the program.

Carroll County and
Rural Free Delivery On April 3, 1899, Westminster Postmaster Edwin Shriver set out in his “post office on wheels” to deliver mail to the homes of rural families. This marked the beginning of the Rural Free Delivery of mail to all customers around the county. Jim Shriver takes a look at Carroll County’s role in the development of this controversial project and delves into first-person accounts of the early deliveries and their impact on local communities. Past Times for Children: The Civil War Comes to Westminster Children 3 to 6 years old will discover what Carroll County was like in the 1800s. They will travel back in time through themed stories, songs and crafts or activities. Your child will learn the basics of the Civil War through pictures, stories and creativity. They will make a clothespin soldier to take home. The following weekend is Westminster’s Corbit’s Charge Commemoration, a living history encampment commemorating the Battle of Westminster in June 1863. What a great tie- in for the kids! 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Koontz-Yingling Learning Center at Cockey’s, 216 East Main Street in Westminster, MD. Pipe Creek Meeting One of the oldest churches in Carroll County is the Pipe Creek Meeting House in Union Bridge. Gwen Handler and Bill Powel examine the history of Quakers in Maryland, their influence on the town of Union Bridge and the history of the Pipe Creek Meeting. The Legacy of William Henry Rinehart Carroll County native William Henry Rinehart was an important 19th century American sculptor, well-known for his neoclassical, ideal figures, and his naturalistic portraits. In a career that spanned only twenty years, Rinehart’s impressive body of work placed him among the leaders in the development of American Sculpture. Nancy Kurtz of the Maryland Historical Trust examines Rinehart’s legacy of art and scholarship. B.L.T.s are held at Carroll Post, American Legion, Westminster, MD. Your child will explore the world of food and how to find it on a farm. Jack wakes up and asks his Mom for pancakes and then the food adventure begins in the book Pancakes Pancakes by Eric Carle. St. Benjamin’s at 250 St. Benjamin’s (Krider’s) Church began in 1761 to serve the Lutherans of eastern Frederick County. Louise Meledin and other members of the congregation trace the history of the church from its beginnings in a log cabin shared with the German Reformed congregation to its role today in Carroll County. They will travel back in time through themed stories, songs and crafts or activities. There were many mills in this area. The most popular would have been the grist mill that would have ground the wheat into flour. Children will experience the mill and how it works from the book The Little Red Hen. They will create a wheat art project. 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Koontz-Yingling Learning Center at Cockey’s, 216 East Main Street in Westminster, MD. Heat Transfer Products and Services - a Corporate Overview Established in 1976 in Baltimore, Evapco is a world-wide leading manufacturer of evaporative cooling products and services. The Taneytown manufacturing facility and corporate offices have been expanded multiple times since moving to Carroll County in 1983 and currently employ hundreds of Carroll County residents. To end the year, we will discuss the various limestone quarries in the area. Limestone is crushed and used for many different purposes.
