TUESDAY, JUNE 25
Bus Trip - Lancaster TRIP IS SOLD OUT -
WAITING LIST IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE
Join HSCC on Tuesday, June 25, as we journey to several locations in
Pennsylvania. Our first stop is Rock Ford Plantation, home of
Revolutionary War general Edward Hand. Hand joined the Continental Army
as Lt. Colonel of the 1st Battalion of Pennsylvania Riflemen. He led
troops at Boston, Long Island, White Plains and Trenton, and became
Adjutant General to George Washington in 1781. After the war, Hand
returned to Lancaster and entered politics. Hand’s c.1794 Georgian style
mansion remains remarkably preserved and essentially unchanged
architecturally. In addition to the mansion, the plantation boasted a
tenant house, springhouse, two barns and numerous outbuildings. Located
on the bank of the Conestoga River, the house takes its name from the
place where the river could be crossed - "Rock Ford."
Then we’re off for a very special lunch
experience. We’ll ride the rails on the Strasburg Railroad where we’ll
enjoy a special “Hobo Lunch” in the dining car. Lunch includes baked
beans, chips, dessert, beverage, choice of a hot sandwich and a souvenir
knapsack. Sandwich choices are: BBQ; cheese steak; or pulled pork.
Sandwich choice should be made when making a reservation.
In the
afternoon, we’ll learn about Pennsylvania agriculture with a visit to
the Twin Brook Winery. The winery produces a number of award-winning
wines on 67 acres of vineyards. We’ll get a tour of the winery and a
tasting of up to six wines paired with an assortment of cheeses and
chocolates.
The bus departs from the parking lot
on Ralph Street, behind the Church of the Ascension, at 8:30 and returns
at 4:30. Cost for the trip (includes transportation, admissions, and
lunch) is $85 for HSCC members
and $95 for non-members. Reservations are required by June 14. No
reservations are guaranteed until payment is received; no refunds can be
made after the reservation deadline. Call HSCC at 410-848-6494 to
make a reservation.
